Local student heading to international robotics competition

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- After weeks of work, one group of local students are taking their robots to a worldwide robotics competition.

It can aim, shoot, and score.  It is a robot designed and built by a group of local high school students also known as Columbus First Alliance Robotics Team 4188.

"Nighthawks" patrolling for DUI's in Columbus

Georgia State Patrol is bringing a new DUI task force to the Columbus area.

The group known as the Nighthawks has already been a success in the Atlanta and Savannah areas.

A task force of six troopers will work with the Sheriff's office, Marshall's office, and Columbus police to hunt down those driving under the influence.

Harris Blackwood, Director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, has seen firsthand how well these units work.

Muscogee County's graduation rate dips under new formula

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- Muscogee County's graduation rate dropped due to a new formula that allows states to compare rates across the nation. The state's rate is 67%, while Muscogee County's is a little higher at 68%. Under the old formula Muscogee County's graduation rate was a little more than 80%.

5th Annual Veterans and Veterans Stand Down needs translators

COLUMBUS, GA - The 5th Annual Homeless Veterans & Veterans Stand Down is coming up on Saturday, April 28 from 7 am to 4 pm at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center.

They are still in need of interpreters and translators to volunteer and donate their time.

Nightly I-185 lane closures through next Wednesday

COLUMBUS, GA - I-185 will have lane closures for the next week on both north and southbound lanes at St. Mary's Road and Macon Road overpasses.

The work will start at 9 pm and last until 5 pm nightly from Wednesday, April 11 through Wednesday, April 18, weather permitting.

COLUMBUS, GA - On April 18, both Columbus-area Epperly Tire locations will continue their Changing Oil Changing Lives event by donating 100% of the oil change proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter.

“We conduct Changing Oil Changing Lives every month to give back to worthy causes within our community,” said Epperly Tire owner, David Epperly. “This month, we couldn’t think of a more deserving organization than The Alzheimer’s Association.”

Gas prices send people looking for new cars

It seems like skyrocketing gas prices would hurt car sales, but a new report says paying nearly $4.00 at the pump has actually boosted car dealerships across the country.

Automotive News reports that 13% more vehicles were sold this March compared to last year with people looking for more fuel efficient models.

Brad Williams, General Sales Manager with Rivertown Ford in Columbus, says their dealership is seeing much of the same from customers.
