Man dies of natural causes in Columbus crash Thursday

Columbus police say a man died while behind the wheel Thursday night.

The 43-year-old man was traveling on Wellborn Drive near Wilcox Way around midnight Friday when he lost consciousness and hit a bush.

Police believe the man had a heart attack and died before crashing his 93 Ford Mustang.

Investigators do not suspect foul play but will continue to investigate until a cause of death is determined.

West Point Football scrimmage Friday

FORT BENNING, GA - Fort Benning will host the West Point Spring Football Scrimmage at Doughboy Stadium, March 9 at 2:00 p.m.

The Army football team, the Black Knights, will conduct 14 practice sessions at their home stadium at West Point, N.Y., leading up to the final preseason intrasquad scrimmage, the annual Black and Gold Game, being held here. This is the first time the Black and Gold game has been played at a location other than West Point.

Lions make final roster cuts before opener

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- With two weeks' worth of training camp now in completed, the Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League have released their first official 27 man roster for the 2012 season.

Columbus Lions fans will need some time recognizing members of their own team this season, as 18 rookies will comprise the opening 27 man roster this week when the team travels for their season opener against the Richmond Raiders.

Columbus defense attorney William Kirby dies

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home confirms that William L. Kirby, better known as Bill, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 63.

Kirby was a well-known defense attorney in Columbus.  He worked on several high-profiled cases in our area including the "Stocking Strangler" case.

Visitation is set for 5-7 p.m. Friday at Striffler-Hamby in Columbus.  Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home's chapel.
