Juvenile offenders and rescue dogs graduating from training program

HARRIS COUNTY, GA - Ten juvenile offenders and six dogs rescued by the Humane Society of Harris County will graduate from a unique 12-week program in which the youth taught the canines basic obedience skills so that the dogs may be adopted by new owners. The young men, residents of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice’s Muscogee Youth Development Campus (YDC) in Midland, Georgia, will demonstrate their prowess as trainers and the dogs’ new ability to sit, stay, walk on a leash, lie down, and, in some cases, perform a few tricks at the ceremony Thursday, October 20, from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at Muscogee YDC: 7700-A Chattsworth Road, Midland, GA 31820; (706)565-4391.

$30,000 worth of laundry machines stolen from laundromat

$30,000 worth of laundry machines stolen from laundromat

COLUMBUS, GA - The Soap Haven Laundromat on Miller Road had about $30,000 worth of laundry machines stolen between Thursday October 14 and Wednesday October 19. There were eight commercial front load washers, one commercial stack dryer, and one iron base stolen. The items were located outside of the building and there was no property damage. The case is under investigation.

COLUMBUS, GA - The Shaw High School Raiders family will host a Red-Out remembrance in honor of Conner Weeks, a Shaw senior and Raider baseball player, who died Saturday. The event will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. at Kinnett Stadium during the last football game of the season.

“Red was Conner’s favorite color,” said Principal Michael Barden.  “We’re asking those who plan to attend to wear red.”

Firearms deer season opens October 22

SOCIAL CIRCLE, GA - It is finally that time of the year again for Georgia hunters. Firearms deer season opens Saturday, Oct. 22 and lasts through Jan. 1, 2012 in the Northern Zone and in the Southern Zone, through Jan. 15, 2012.

“Regulated hunting is the most cost effective and efficient means of managing the deer herd,” says John W. Bowers, assistant chief of Game Management for the Wildlife Resources Division. “In addition, sportsmen and women provide more than $30 million each year to fund wildlife conservation in the state through license fees and self-imposed excise taxes collected on the purchase of firearms, ammunition, archery equipment and fishing equipment.”  

Fort Middle School partnering with City for canned goods drive

COLUMBUS, GA - Fort Service Learning Magnet Academy will be partnering with the City of Columbus to squeeze out hunger. They will be collecting canned goods on Tuesday, November 1 and Wednesday, November 2, in front of the school from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Can goods will be given to the Valley Rescue Mission to stock the shelves. 

Harvest Faith Community "Harvest Fun Festival" October 29

COLUMBUS, GA - Harvest Faith Community, 7777 Whitesville Road, will hold their annual “Harvest Fun Festival” Halloween alternative on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, from 11a.m. until 2  p.m. This year the event will feature door prizes, an inflatable “bouncy” for the kids, free hot dogs, face painting, kids fun games, Hawaiian Shaved Ice and other activities, in addition to volunteers from the church giving out candy at each activity.

The event is open to the public.
