Twenty teaching jobs at stake at Monday night's budget meeting

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- Twenty teachers in the Muscogee County School District could be let go if the proposed 2014 budget and reduction in force is approved by board members.

That includes six elementary, five middle, and nine high school teaching jobs.

Custodial positions and about 17 other staff positions in the district could be cut as well.

The final budget proposal is expected to be voted on at a meeting Monday night at 6 p.m.

Administrators are proposing the district manages with a $250 million budget.

Inmate Joshua Hall escapes during jail transfer

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- A trusted inmate interned at Muscogee County Jail has escaped.

Authorities tell us that 23 year old Joshua Hall escaped while being transferred from the jail to the stockade.

Hall was recently arrested and charged for driving with a suspended license, fleeing a police officer, and reckless driving.

3 families move in to their new Habitat for Humanity homes

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- Habitat for Humanity dedicated three homes in Columbus on Friday June 14. These homes were their first ever "Energy Star" homes.

With the completion of these 3 homes, it makes 275 homes that have been built by Habitat for Humanity in the area.

We spoke with one of the new homeowners, Loretta Baldwin, who explains what this means to her.

The families had to help build their houses--putting in 500 hours of work with habitat volunteers.

Loretta's family will each have their own bed rooms.

17 year old found dead in CVS parking lot

Steven Bradley Foster, a 17-year-old from Alabaster, AL, was found dead in the backseat of an SUV in the parking lot of CVS at Whitesville Rd. and Double Churches Rd. in Columbus.

The body was found at around 3 a.m. Friday morning, June 14.

Authorities say Foster ran away from home the previous weekend, and his parents had filed a missing persons report.

According to the coroner, Foster appears to have been dead for two or three days.

Military families find creative ways to celebrate Father’s Day

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- Dads play many roles in
our lives. They're our teacher, nurturer, and best friend.

While many children will
be celebrating Father's Day this Sunday, some might not get to see their dads
on this special day.

We met with a girl who
hasn't spent Father's Day with her dad for the last four years.

While others are
celebrating this Sunday with their fathers, Alexis Dowdell will have to
celebrate the day without him. Her father is in Afghanistan and she will have
to honor him from afar.

Carver High teen aspiring to be a model, will be featured in magazine

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- A local teenager is living her dreams as she works to become a household name in modeling.

Destiny Elliot, 14, is an aspiring model who has already had a bit of success nationally.

Standing at 5 foot 11 inches tall, the Carver High honor roll student says her role models are Tyra Banks, Cynthia Bailey, and Naomi Campbell.
