The Fresh Market serves up cupcakes for a cause

The Fresh Market stores nationwide will host a cupcake decorating event this Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Customers will be able to purchase and decorate a delicious cupcake from The Fresh Market’s in-store bakeries for a donation of $3. The Fresh Market will donate 100 percent of the money raised to No Kid Hungry to support its efforts to end childhood hunger in America by connecting kids in need with nutritious food and teaching their families how to cook healthy, affordable meals.

The always popular “Margaret Carney Tea & Music Series” will be returning for its 7th season to the Columbus Public Library on Friday afternoons this May. This year’s theme will be “A Tune… A Tale… and a Cup of Tea”, featuring music with strong narrative imagery, and tea grown at the Charleston Tea Plantation in South Carolina.

A near 100% chance of rain will be moving the First Annual Columbus Children’s Book Festival indoors.

Originally intended to take place on the front lawn of the Columbus Public Library, the event will now take place inside the Library building at 3000 Macon Road.

The long-awaited First Annual Columbus Children’s Book Festival debuts on Saturday May 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Columbus State to Graduate One of its Largest Classes Ever

COLUMBUS, Ga. —Columbus State University will graduate one of its largest classes ever at its spring commencement ceremony at 6 p.m. Monday, May 6 in the Columbus Civic Center. Dan Amos, Aflac chairman and CEO, will also receive an honorary doctorate during the ceremony. 

CSU expects to award 769 degrees (240 graduate, 503 undergraduate and 26 summer candidates) that evening. The commencement speaker will be Dink NeSmith, chairman of the state Board of Regents for the University System of Georgia.

Georgia Military College Columbus Professor receives Character Educator of the Year Award

The President of Georgia Military College (GMC), Major General Peter J. Boylan, declared professor Dr. Keshia Easterling of Columbus to be the GMC Junior College Character Educator of the Year.

The award is presented annually to honor GMC faculty members who have distinguished themselves during the school year. Easterling was chosen for elevating student understanding of ethics and for the creative and innovative manner in which she inspired students to value ethical behavior during the 2012-2013 academic year.

Georgia Military College Columbus to Host Blood Drive

Georgia Military College Columbus will have the American Red Cross Bloodmobile on campus May 1 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.  The campus is located at 7300 Blackmon Road. 

Members of the community are invited to join us by making an appointment, or walking-in. Donors with appointments will have priority over walk-in donors.

Midtown Classic 5K Run and One Mile Fun Run to benefit local neighborhood non-profits

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- On Saturday, April 27, Wynnton United Methodist Church (UMC) will sponsor and host the Seventh Annual Midtown Classic 5K Run and One Mile Fun Run. Proceeds of this event will support the Wynnton Neighborhood Network, and Wynnton Neighborhood Housing.

The One Mile Fun Run begins at 8:00 a.m. Participants in this event may walk or run.

The 5K Race begins at 9:00 am.

The race course will begin at Wynnton UMC, run through the Lakebottom area and return to the Wynnton UMC site. All age groups may participate. Awards will be given from ages 0-70+.
