Cathy Williams out as school board chair | News
(WTVM)- Board chair Cathy Williams has announced she will not seek to remain in her post. Williams has lead the board for the past 2 years and did not get the support to remain chair.
Williams told News Leader 9 she didn't get enough support from the board to continue as chair. She says the board was split on a number of big issues like supporting former Superintendent Susan Andrews-calling her resignation the final straw.
"The board never really healed after Dr. Andrews left and I'm hoping that by removing my name and supporting new leadership that it will give the board an opportunity to begin healing, I think that is important for the citizens of Columbus," Cathy Williams said. "We had this faction out there of Boot the Board that kept it stirred up we had contested races that some board members lost."
A new leader will emerge to take over the board. A likely candidate is vice-chair Rob Varner.
Williams says when the board split, not enough was done bridge that gap."I will put that totally on me as the board chair. I failed to allow the board to function in a manner that would allow it to heal."
After Tuesday, Williams will maintain her position as an at-large member of the board. She's hoping with this change things can move forward without strife.
"We have two new board members, we will have new leadership, and hopefully very soon we will have a new superintendent. Hopefully those three things combined, simultaneously, will allow this board to move forward,"said Williams.
