Expo helps homeless get back on their feet | News
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- The Open Door Community House in Columbus is hosting its eighth annual Homeless Resource Fair and Expo.
This event gives homeless people an opportunity to be able to engage with service providers, and employers to get them the help they need.
They provide information, assistance, clothes and even a haircut for those who attend.
We spoke with David Wallace, director of residential services with New Horizons, who explains what exactly this expo can accomplish.
"We've had a spike in the number of people that are homeless, and so this is an opportunity to go after those folks, help them to get back on their feet, re-enter mainstream society, become productive members of society and to end that homelessness for them," said Wallace.
With the economic downturn, those in poverty are slipping in to homelessness causing an increase in the homeless population.
We caught up with Mark Brown, who is recently homeless, who tells us this event has given him new hope.
"God blessed me with hopefully a place to stay and an application to be in the cooking institute at the open door community house," Brown said.
He says he would like to be a chef one day and hopes that other homeless people in the community will be impacted as much as he was.
"I feel real great, I mean, it's a stress reliever and on top of that it's a blessing from God, I just hope that this can help a lot of people get off the streets and be very successful at what they do," Brown said.
If you would like help from the Open Door Community House, you can go to their offices on 2nd Avenue in Columbus or reach them by phone at 706-323-5518.
