Pets of the Day: May 2

(WTVM)- Pets at Columbus Animal Care and Control are often seen in cages, unhappy, and waiting for rescue. In addition to the pets you're about to see, two animals from last week are still available, and their rescue is urgent.

You have the opportunity to give these pets a second chance at life.

Tag 302 is a female Domestic Short Haired calico.  She is already spayed and has an incredibly loving personality. She's spirited and will be an excellent family pet.

Thousands of tax payer dollars fund city workers on paid leave

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- Three is the magic number of city employees currently on paid administrative in Columbus, but here's the kicker: two of those employees have been getting pay checks from the city for the past 18 months.

Just how much money is this costing you? We went to the mayor for the answer.

"It's been a great deal of money, hundreds of thousands of dollars the tax payers have had to pay for employees that are not actually performing services," said Mayor Teresa Tomlinson. 

Drug Take Back Day a success in Muscogee County

MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA (WTVM)- The nationwide Drug Take
Back proved to be a great success, especially here in Muscogee County.

The Muscogee County
Sheriff's Office reports that nearly 700 pounds of prescription and
over-the-counter medications were collected through the program. 

The big white box was
installed at the sheriff's department last week and since then has been filling
up.

This is the second time
that the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office has participated in the drug take
back.

The always popular “Margaret Carney Tea & Music Series” will be returning for its 7th season to the Columbus Public Library on Friday afternoons this May. This year’s theme will be “A Tune… A Tale… and a Cup of Tea”, featuring music with strong narrative imagery, and tea grown at the Charleston Tea Plantation in South Carolina.

Local dry cleaning business goes greener with Autogas-powered service vehicles

Sun Ray Dry Cleaners, the Columbus and Ft. Benning, area dry cleaning chain, has converted two GMC Savanna service vans to run on clean, American-made propane autogas.

The company has already been known for investing in more eco-friendly dry cleaning methods. Now, Sun Ray is the first dry cleaners locally to operate autogas vehicles. The new autogas vans will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions and harmful pollutants, they will help reduce the fleet’s fuel costs as well.

John B. Amos Cancer Center Receives National Achievement Award

The John B. Amos Cancer Center, part of the Columbus Regional Healthcare System, has been recognized as a recipient of the 2012 Commission on Cancer (CoC) Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA). 

Seventy-nine cancer programs in the U.S. received this award designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. The John B. Amos Cancer Center is one of only three accredited cancer programs in Georgia to receive the award and the state’s only Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center recognized for this achievement.
